Overview

The first step in learning how to read is cracking the code of sounds and symbols. In the English language, there are 44 phonemes, however, there are many more letter patterns representing those 44 sounds. This is where decoding for reading and encoding for writing get tricky. Explicit instruction in word recognition is required to develop skills such as phonological awareness, orthography, and phonics. For some learners the sound-spelling code is also critical to access full communication.
